Today It Begins

I am obsessed with textiles. I always have been.

Textiles carry  memories. The muted burgundy floral that covered my grandmother's rocking chair. The elegant black crepe of my mother's cocktail dress. The nubby flax that she embroidered with a vibrant tropical bird when she was a girl. The vibrant mod cotton print that my mother sewed into a fabulous summer  dress for me the day before my father died.

My eyes feast on vibrant colors, muted colors, sparkling colors.

My senses are filled with the crispness of cotton, the mysterious texture of velvet, the intricacies of lace and the airy floating of chiffon and organza. I adore the process of machine embroidery, the sheen of rayon thread as my embroidery machine works its magic.

They say that the one who dies with the biggest stash wins.

I don't think I like that idea very much at all. It's sort of sad. It is defeatist.

This blog is dedicated to every quilter and home sewer and estate sale addict who simply cannot resist acquiring beautiful fabrics in abundance. You know who you are. Fabric has taken over your home and your lives.

Today I am 60 years old. I'm not quite sure how that happened.
I don't feel 60.  But here I am. 60.

OK. It's a number I wasn't looking forward to, but here we are, so moving on ...

Today I will begin my personal challenge. I will not buy any more fabric. I am done. Today I will begin my golden years project: I will sew through every last bit of fabric that I own. I will stitch out every single embroidery design I own and use every last inch of thread.

I will leave nothing behind. I will finish it all.

But today my machines will be quiet. Today I will enjoy the sun and the ocean air. Today I will celebrate being 60 and I will begin to take better care of myself so that I will be up to the task.

Will you join me?

UNLESS I need it to go with something.. Maybe a background or border or backing... So count me in... Gail will keep tabs on me...
